| Emergency number: 01536 514046 - Identify the position of the stop tap on the incoming water supply and the gas isolation value next to the gas meter and make sure the valves turn freely. Also check location of stop tap in street. If you encounter any problems contact your water/gas board.
- Check the loft space for any pipework or tanks. Make sure they are in good working order and well insulated. You can also familiarise yourself with other isolation values in your property especially to the tank and the hot water cylinder.
- During severe cold weather where you have water pipework in loft space, open loft hatch and leave open until the freezing period is over.
- Always have dripping taps or values repaired immediately as they could lead to more serious problems.
- Make sure that the heating system is serviced annually.
- Frequently check the hot water cylinder for any signs of dampness.
- In the event of a burst or leaking water pipe carry out the following:
- Isolate main stop tap.
- Open all taps and drain.
- Turn off heating boiler.
- Call the emergency number above.
- Identify if water spillage is likely to come in contact with electrical fittings. If so turn off electricity supply.
- In the event of a gasd leak turn off the gas isolation value next to meter. Do not turn on any switches or use any naked lights. Open doors and windows to ventilate the area. Evacuate the building. 0800 111 999. - In the event your heating system fails to operate carry out the following:
- Check time clock and other controls are set to ON.
- If sealed system check water pressure is high enough and fill up if required.
- Check if boiler operates.
- Check if pump is operating. Sometimes pump sticks and can be released by a slight knock with a hammer.
- If in doubt call the emergency number at the top of the page.
